It’s NEAL ADAMS MONTH here at 13th Dimension, and we’re featuring daily commentary by Adams on his variant-cover project for DC Comics. Each of his 27 variants is a twist on one of his famous covers from the past. He provided the pencils, and the inks and colors were handled by some of the biggest names in the business like Jim Lee and Terry Dodson.

Gotta feel good when a legend likes what you do.

Neal Adams, when discussing turning Action Comics #219 into Sinestro #20 (click here for that commentary), praised inker Scott Hanna’s strong line work.

Now, Hanna gets his say. As we have with the other inkers during NEAL ADAMS MONTH, we asked him a couple quick questions:

Inked by Scott Hanna, colored by Jeromy Cox and due out 2/17.

Dan Greenfield: What’s your favorite classic Neal Adams cover?

Scott Hanna: Has to be the classic Superman vs. Muhammad Ali. I loved the detail of all the recognizable faces in the audience on a wraparound, oversize comic.

Dan: How has Adams influenced you as an artist?

Scott: I think Neal had a strong influence on my whole generation of artists. He had more realistic draftsmanship, yet with a recognizable style that upped the ante for the industry at the time. He also made more detailed rendering and facial expressions that influenced me strongly.

Dan: You have your own style. Neal Adams has his. How did you work to meld the two on this homage cover?

Scott: I always try to adapt to the penciller’s individual style, but the tough part was relating the new cover to the classic cover that it was based on. Neal has changed his style over the years, so I wanted to ink him more as he is today, even though I was also looking at the classic cover while I did it.
