It’s NEAL ADAMS MONTH here at 13th Dimension, and we’re featuring daily commentary by Adams on his variant-cover project for DC Comics. Each of his 27 variants is a twist on one of his famous covers from the past. He provided the pencils, and the inks and colors were handled by some of the biggest names in the business like Frank Miller and Bill Sienkiewicz.

One of the coolest parts of NEAL ADAMS MONTH has been getting the input of the guest inkers themselves — whether it’s a fellow legend like Walt Simonson (click here) or a working inker like Richard Friend, who got to live out a childhood dream by working on an Adams cover. (Click here to read that. It’s one of the most charming entries of the month. And click here for others, like P. Craig Russell and Tom Palmer.)

This time, it’s Dave Gibbons, an artist who turned in one of the finest jobs of the entire month. (No surprise there. This is Dave Gibbons we’re talking about.)

(By the way, make sure you also check out Neal’s take on Gibbons’ work on Cyborg #8. It’s good stuff. Click here.)

Dan Greenfield: What’s your favorite classic Neal Adams cover?

Dave Gibbons: Hard choice between Superman #233 (classic Superman shot, exploding with power) and Batman #237 (creepy and action packed Batman).

Check out Adams’ thoughts on these covers here and here.

Dan: How has Adams influenced you as an artist?

Dave: Neal’s commitment and professionalism is an example to us all. He draws good, too!

Dan: You have your own style. Neal has his. How did you work to meld the two on your homage cover?

Dave: I just tried to be as faithful to his pencils as my own talent allowed. It’s always a learning experience to ink someone else’s pencils and this was a master class!
