MORBIUS’ Debut to Be Re-Released as FACSIMILE EDITION

EXCLUSIVE: A replica of The Amazing Spider-Man #101 is coming — ads and all!

Marvel’s got three Facsimile Editions headed your way in May — and we’re gonna be revealing each one through Tuesday. (We’ve also got the theme of Marvel Tales for you Wednesday. Unfortunately, May is a True Believers skip month.)

Anyway, we’re gonna kick this off with a bona fide Bronze Age classic — 1971’s The Amazing Spider-Man #101.

Here’s the official solicition blurb — to be formally released by Marvel soon:

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #101 FACSIMILE EDITION
Written by ROY THOMAS • Penciled by GIL KANE
Cover by GIL KANE
The dramatic debut of Morbius the Living Vampire! Dr. Michael Morbius has a lust for blood, and he’s out to sink his fangs into Spider-Man! But the wallcrawler is even more spiderlike than usual — because, in an effort to “cure” himself of his spider-powers, he’s ended up with four extra limbs! Peter must seek out Curt Connors, the Lizard, to return himself to normal — but little does Spidey know that he’s on a collision course with Morbius that will put him in the crosshairs of not one, but two monsters! Witness the beginning of a rivalry for the ages between webslinger and bloodsucker, in the issue that began the tragic tale of the misunderstood Michael Morbius! It’s one of the all-time great Marvel comic books, boldly re-presented in its original form, ads and all! Reprinting AMAZING SPIDER-MAN (1963) #101.

A few thoughts:

— Gil Kane, man. Gil Kane. And Spidey with six arms!

— If it seems like we just got a Spidey #101 reprint, you’re right. There was a dollar True Believers edition in 2019. But this gives you the whole web-shootin’ match — ads, letters and whatnot. And this issue features letters on Marvel’s landmark drug issues. Keen.

— Why is Morbius in the spotlight? Well, he does have his own comics series right now and perhaps something special is set for the May solicitations. (I’m just speculating.) Oh and then there’s this:

— Requisite Price Comparison: A decent-grade, unslabbed copy recently sold on eBay for $810. This is about four bucks. Wowza.

  1. Never really got Morbius, other than as an attempt to get around the Comics Code. One year later, after the Comics Code relaxed its rules, Marvel would issue the far superior “Tomb of Dracula”
