Marvel’s Classic CONAN THE BARBARIAN #1 to Get Facsimile Edition

Been awhile since we’ve gotten one of these…

Before the pandemic, Marvel and DC kept us awash in Facsimile Editions and dollar reprints. Since then, they’ve been far and few between, an apparent casualty of a changing publishing environment.

But, hey guess what: Marvel’s back in the game this December with the Conan the Barbarian #1 Facsimile Edition.

Check out the official solicitation, released by Marvel Thursday:

CONAN THE BARBARIAN #1 FACSIMILE EDITION
ROY THOMAS (W) BARRY WINDSOR-SMITH (A/C)
Over fifty years ago, legendary writer Roy Thomas teamed with visionary artist Barry Windsor-Smith for the first comic book adaptation of Robert E. Howard’s pulp novel icon — introducing True Believers to swords and sorcery in the Mighty Marvel Manner! Conan comic books soon became a huge, industry-changing success story — and it all began with CONAN THE BARBARIAN #1 in 1970! Join the young Cimmerian warrior as he and an Aesir raiding party invade the land of Vanaheim — setting Conan on a path of adventure leading to winged demons, a dark temple and the mysterious Star-Stone, which would offer a vision of Conan’s future as a king! It’s one of the all-time great Marvel comic books, boldly re-presented in its original form, ads and all! Reprinting CONAN THE BARBARIAN (1970) #1.
32 PGS./Rated T+ …$3.99

A few thoughts:

A scan from the original

— For those of you who may have forgotten, the beauty of Facsimile Editions is that they include everything that was in the original — ads, Bullpen Bulletins and so forth. This edition is due Dec. 1.

— This is a really welcome development and I hope it means we’ll be seeing more of these on a regular basis again.

Standard Price Comparison: As you might imagine, the 1970 original costs a bundle. An unslabbed, high-grade copy recently sold on eBay for $1,950. That’s a whole lot more than a $3.99 reprint.

  2. Isn’t there a fitness ad on the inside cover featuring a pre-movie Arnold? Or is that one a little later?
