Easy.  Hands down, it’s “The Goblin Lives!” from Spectacular Spider-Man Magazine #2 (1968). A triple-length story by Stan Lee and John Romita, it was a breathtakingly suspenseful cat-and-mouse game between Peter Parker and Norman Osborn, whole swaths of which were lifted for the first Spidey movie — most notably, the terrific sequence where the whole supporting cast is having dinner with Norman, and Norman knows Peter is Spidey, and Peter KNOWS he knows, and Peter’s DESPERATELY trying to extricate himself and his loved ones from danger without tipping his hand. The best.

Mark Waid is the inventor of a machine that adds seven hours to the day, thereby enabling him to write every other comic on the market, plus co-own a comic shop and a webcomic publishing company. Oh, and he’s one of Marvel’s biggest names right now, with Daredevil and Hulk.

  1. A very good choice by Mark. This is also probably the second best Spidey cover ever after ASM #50.
