Koren Shadmi’s LOVE ADDICT Holiday Hookup Playlist

Better than another viewing of Love Actually.

So, I’m sitting there at the 13th Dimension Christmas Party last night, watching Sandy from Accounting creepily eye this intern while talking about the relative value of kyber and dilithium crystals with Bailey from Legal.

We were pretty packed in, with Kryptonian D.J. Ku-El pushing the oonce, oonce, oonce, oonce as only he can. I could barely hear myself think and even though I own 13th Dimension and I was in charge of this whole shebang, I found the whole scene to be pretty gross.

But, hey, that’s what employees expect this time of year, y’know? A little out-of-the-office weeknight sleaze followed the next day by hungover, furtive glances and ignored texts between unfortunately consenting adults working in adjacent cubicles. A couple days later, it’s off to Grandma’s for some wholesome family discord and then we can all forget about those regrettable holiday hookups!

But does the music have to suck so much?

Koren Shadmi has your fix.

The cartoonist behind Love Addict — about the unending search for unending companionship in this most modern of ages — has compiled a Spotify playlist for your, ahem, needs.

Lower the lights and check it out here.

He selects class acts like Joe Jackson and Bryan Ferry. Much more suitable for that Tinder match or inviting over that cutie from the ninth floor than embarrassing yourself at a company-sanctioned meat market.

Now, Koren and I don’t exactly share musical tastes, but he knows of what he speaks on the dating front:

Love Addict is a semi-autobiographical comic about online dating. The book is inspired by a period of one year in my life, where — after a bad breakup — I joined OkCupid and went on quite a few dates. In a sense, the book is a cautionary tale. Online dating can be great, and you can meet the love of your life there – I met my wife on OkCupid – but if you are not careful, you might find yourself forever dating new people, never committing, in a type of limbo. The ease of meeting up and hooking up through OkCupid or Tinder has made people perceive other people as dispensable, and that’s not a good thing.”

Wise words.

And hey, my idea of seduction is a turtleneck sweater, fondue by candlelight and Peter Frampton’s “I’m In You.”

I’d listen to him.
