Last year, the Spirit‘s previous cartoonist — Darwyn Cooke — picked Eight Eisner Stories Every Fan Should Read for us here at 13th Dimension.

This year, we decided to spread the wealth and asked some of the industry’s foremost artists — including the likes of Francesco Francavilla and Matt Wagner — to pick their favorite Eisner splash pages.

Here’s artist KEVIN NOWLAN:

“This one is all about the huge shadows, sliced up with a few slivers of light. I love seeing Eisner’s work when it’s a little heavier on the inks.

“It’s a solemn scene. There’s none of Eisner’s whimsical architecture; the moment is too grim for that. If you don’t believe me, check out the Spirit’s worried expression. This is beautiful, confident chiaroscuro. Eisner is saying so much with so little.”
