Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale’s CAPTAIN AMERICA To Get Oversize Gallery Edition

Completing the quartet…

Marvel in the summer began releasing its modern classic Jeph Loeb/Tim Sale “color series” in new, oversize Gallery Editions. Two are out (Spider-Man and Daredevil), one is due late this winter (Hulk) and the fourth — Captain America — now has a release date: July 2, 2024, just in time for Independence Day.

Dig the official description from online listings:

JEPH LOEB & TIM SALE: CAPTAIN AMERICA GALLERY EDITION

The legendary creative team of writer Jeph Loeb and artist Tim Sale share a groundbreaking and uniquely colorful perspective on the early World War 2 adventures of Captain America!

For Steve Rogers, the hardest thing about being a man out of time is being a man without a best friend. As Captain America comes to terms with his loss, he longs for the black and white moral simplicity of World War II: Bucky Barnes charging fearlessly into battle at his side. The Howling Commandos right behind. Odds against them, lives on the line, taking the fight to the greatest evil of all. The Eisner Award-winning team of Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale (DAREDEVIL: YELLOW, SPIDER-MAN: BLUE, HULK: GRAY) revisit the glory days of Captain America and Bucky in a classic tale of a friendship forged in war.

A few thoughts:

— The cover image with the description is clearly a placeholder. Marvel has eschewed the color designations for this series of re-releases (i.e., Spider-Man: Blue, Daredevil: Yellow, Hulk: Gray). Captain America: White raised eyebrows from the jump in 2015, so my guess is that Marvel decided it was time to move on from all the labels.

— The 160-page hardcover lists for $50. Gallery Editions are slightly smaller than the classic, Bronze Age treasury editions.

Standard caveat: This has not been solicited by Marvel yet, so anything can change. There will also likely be a variant cover by the late Sale. Keep coming back to 13th Dimension for updates.

  1. By renaming these editions “…by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale” (including the creators’ names in the titles), the creators earn more money for the books. This is a nice thing Marvel did to help out Tim Sale’s family.
