INSIDE LOOK: The Groovy ‘MEGO’ BATGIRL Playset You’ve Been Waiting For

Whose baby is she? Could be yours…

UPDATED 5/16/20: Hey, we just posted this in April, but it’s the late Yvonne Craig’s birthday, so here you go! Dig it. — Dan

One of the coolest things about being a Batman fanatic growing up in the ’70s was that Mego had you covered. In the 8-inch line alone — the greatest toy slate ever, mind you — you got Batman, Robin, Batgirl, the Joker, the Penguin, the Riddler and Catwoman. Plus there were five vehicles and two different playsets — the Batcave and the Wayne Foundation.

Thing is, you sort of had to make do without the Joker’s Ha-Hacienda or, say, Batgirl’s apartment and secret hideout.

Well, no more.

As we teased the other day, 13th Dimension contributor Anthony Durso — owner of The Toyroom custom toy-package company and Retropolis Tees — has created playsets for both that are right in scale for the 8-inch line.

We’ll show off the Joker’s Ha-Hacienda soon enough. But this time out, we take you inside Barbara Gordon’s inner sanctum:

Now, see what’s great is that this is based on the 1966 Batman show, which featured the best-known version of Barbara Gordon’s apartment and HQ — and 8-inch TV versions of Batgirl and Babs are now readily available. But really, it works for the original Mego Batgirl — and any other 8-inch versions — just as well.

No figures are included.

“Originally this was a Dida triangle box display that had an interior swinging wall to mimic the secret changing wall,” Anthony explained. (Click here for more on Dida.) “The new case presented a bit of a design challenge to get the same aesthetic in a different format but it eventually worked. The artwork was developed by watching and freeze-framing episodes of Season 3 of Batman ’66. To date, this has been the most requested of the old and new versions of my playsets. Go Yvonne Craig!”

Each set — including case, artwork and complete assembly — is $85 plus shipping. Contact either thetoyroom@yahoo.com or you can message Anthony through Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.

Sets currently include: The Fortress of Solitude (click here), the JLA Satellite, the 1966 Batcave, the 1966 Batgirl apartment and changing room, the Joker’s Ha-Hacienda, the Aquacave, the Rock of Eternity, the Hall of Doom, Paradise Island, the Green Lantern HQ on Oa, Iron Man’s Armory and a Scooby-Doo haunted house — with more to come.

Oh, and no, I don’t make a cent off this. Just bringing groovy stuff to you, the masses.
