HOT PICKS! On Sale This Week!

Scott and Dan pick the comics they’re most looking forward to…

Dan Greenfield, editor, 13th Dimension

Amazing Spider-Man Epic Collection: The Secret of the Petrified Tablet TPB, Marvel. Late ’60s Spidey by Lee, Romita and Buscema. And I haven’t read most of these stories. CANNOT WAIT. (Scott concurs: A bona fide Silver Age Spidey classic from Stan Lee and John Romita!)

Star Trek: Year Five Valentine’s Day Special, IDW. I really dig Star Trek: Year Five. It does such a great job of capturing the Original Series vibe. This well-timed special sees Kirk romance another captain who may be his match. By Paul Cornell, Christopher Jones and co.

Batman vs. Ra’s al Ghul #4, DC. A new Neal Adams Batman comic comes out on my birthday. How about that? (Click here for a SNEAK PEEK at the issue.)

Wolverine #1 by Claremont and Miller Facsimile Edition, Marvel. I had a buddy in college who loved Wolverine like I loved Batman. We tried to collaborate on a comic teaming them up. We discussed story beats over steaks. (It was still student dining.) We had a couple of creative sessions. It never went anywhere. I wish I remember his name. I’m pretty sure it was Bill. Either way, this was the Wolverine he was talking about.

Dragonfly and Dragonflyman #4, AHOY Comics. Last issue gave us another classic Silver Age trope – a Boy Wonder who’s jealous of the new girl superhero on the block, only to find she’s actually a robot – but I have a bad feeling about Earth-Omega’s Dragonfly and Stinger. Things are getting meaner and more twisted. Tom Peyer, Peter Krause and a trio of colorists have crafted another winner from The Wrong Earthverse. (Did I just coin a term? I think I did. Hey, mention that in your next letters column!) Click here for an INSIDE LOOK at Jamal Igle’s cover.

Dollar Comics: Batman #567, DC. I totally get that this particular issue ties Cassandra Cain’s comics debut into the movie Birds of Prey. That’s cool. No complaints. But overall, I kind of wish DC would do more Silver and Bronze Age Dollar Comics. Those eras dominate the awesome Facsimile Editions so I’d love to see more in the Dollar Comics format.

The Terrifics #25, DC. I don’t do the Best VARIANTS! column anymore but if I did, this Michael Cho beauty would be near the top of this week’s list. (And Gene Luen Yang’s a terrific writer!)

Wonder Woman #751, DC. Speaking of great variants, I think Jenny Frison is the best Wonder Woman cover artist since Adam Hughes. Dig that Lynda Carter vibe.

Vampirella #3 Replica Edition, Dynamite. Another straight-up reprint – complete with ads – of Vampi’s original Warren series. This is a great time to be a fan of this sort of thing – and I am!

Scott Tipton, contributor-at-large, 13th Dimension

Black Widow Epic Collection: Beware the Black Widow TPB, Marvel. Everything you need to know about the Widow’s first adventures, from her villainous days alongside Hawkeye to her first missions with the Avengers! This book should have been out years ago.

Batman: The Dark Knight Detective Vol. 3 TPB, DC. More never-before-reprinted Batman tales from the ’90s, from creators like Alan Grant and the late, great Norm Breyfogle!

Justice League: Corporate Maneuvers TPB, DC. Giffen and DeMatteis’ Justice League Quarterly tales return to print for the first time since their original release in the 1990s! Complete your JLI collection here!
