HOT PICKS! On Sale This Week!

Scott and Dan pick the comics they’re most looking forward to this week …

Dan Greenfield, editor, 13th Dimension

Action Comics #1000, DC. Is this the easiest Hot Pick ever? Probably. A bunch of stories from some of comics’ best, plus Bendis’ debut on Superman. The only question is how many covers I’ll end up splurging for. (Yes, I’m a sucker. Meanwhile, click here to check out each of the main variant covers. And click here for our complete SUPERMAN WEEK Index of features and tributes.)

Three of the Action Comics #1000 variant covers. On the left: Dan Jurgens, Kevin Nowlan, Alex Sinclair. Center: Mike and Laura Allred. Right: Michael Cho.

Action Comics: 80 Years of Superman Poster, DC. A nifty $9.99 poster featuring all 1000 main Action Comics covers. Nice.

Superman #45, DC. Oh, look. Superman’s also out this week — in fact it’s the last regular issue by the fine team of Peter Tomasi and Patrick Gleason. (Click here for a salute to the fine work of Tomasi, Gleason and Dan Jurgens on the Man of Steel.)

Amazing Spider-Man #799, Marvel. Hey, it’s not Action #1000 but Amazing Spider-Man #800 is hitting next month — and this title is Marvel’s best comic right now. Things are coming to a head between Ol’ Web-Head and Norman Osborn — thanks to Dan Slott, Stuart Immonen, Wade von Grawbadger, Marte Gracia and Alex Ross.

Star Wars: Poe Dameron #26, Marvel. Wonder what Poe, Rey and Finn talked about after The Last Jedi? Find out here. (Click here for a SNEAK PEEK. It’s cool.)

Aquaman #35, DC. Still one of the best titles out there. By Dan Abnett, Robson Rocha and the rest of the Aquacrew.

Scott Tipton, co-owner, Blastoff Comics, North Hollywood, Calif.

Planet of the Apes Archive Vol. 3, Boom! Studios. Another hardcover collection of Marvel’s Apes magazine stories from the 1970s, with work from Doug Moench and Apes-sequel screenwriter Paul Dehn.

Action Comics #1000, DC. It’s Action #1000. Come on. How can you not buy it? Also very curious to see what a Bendis Superman will be like.

Main cover by Jim Lee

Batman: Arkham — Hugo Strange TPB, DC Comics. Professor Hugo Strange has been one of my favorite Bat-villains ever since the classic Englehart/Rogers tales of the 1970s, which are included herein.

Walter Simonson’s Battlestar Galactica Art Edition, Dynamite. Normally I avoid all the other publishers’ Artist’s Edition knockoffs on general principle, but it’s going to be hard to pass up this one.

The Mighty Thor by Walter Simonson Vol. 3 TPB, Marvel. And speaking of Walt Simonson, here’s another chance to read his great Thor run without having to go on a crazy back-issue hunt or struggle with a huge, unwieldy omnibus. Walt’s Thor was the best the book ever was.
