Action Comics: 80 Years of Superman, DC. This is the official hardcover retrospective celebrating both Action Comics #1000 — which is out 4/18 — and Superman’s eight full decades. Includes a never-published story believed to be written by Jerry Siegel, with art by the Joe Shuster Studio; a new story by Paul Levitz and Neal Adams; several essays; and a selection of some of the most important Action Comics stories of all time. A must-have for Superfans. (Scott concurs below, by the way.)

Captain America #700, Marvel. Mark Waid, Chris Samnee and Matt Wilson wrap up the Out of Time arc — and this also happens to be Samnee’s last Marvel comic (at least for the foreseeable future). Also features a back-up story by Waid with repurposed art by Jack Kirby. Neat. (Click here for a SNEAK PEEK.)

Star Trek: New Visions #21, IDW. Kirk and Kor — the team-up you never expected! (I love writing sentences like that.) John Byrne’s photocomics can be hit or miss but this one looks like fun. Real Trekness.

Planet of the Apes: Ursus #4, Boom! Studios. Ursus’ backstory almost reads like Zelig on the Planet of the Apes. Writer David Walker isn’t just giving you the general’s origin story, he’s telling you he popped up at various points in the original movie — only we just didn’t see him. Art by Lalit Kumar Sharma and Jason Wordie.

Marvel Masterworks: The Avengers Vol. 18 HC, Marvel. One of my favorite roster changes herein, where government jerk Henry Peter Gyrich fires half the team and kicks the Guardians of the Galaxy out of Avengers Mansion. A great Avengers period from David Michelinie, John Byrne and George Perez.
