History of DC’s PRE-CRISIS MINISERIES Coming in 2022

The first wave of a comics innovation…

When DC inadvertently invented the miniseries in the ’70s, it led to an ’80s boom of limited runs — which will be the subject of TwoMorrows’ Back Issue #137, out later this year.

Dig the official description:

BACK ISSUE #137 – August 2022 – 84 FULL-COLOR pages

1980s Pre-Crisis DC Miniseries! Green Arrow, Secrets of the Legion, Tales of the Green Lantern Corps, Krypton Chronicles, America vs. the Justice Society, Legend of Wonder Woman, Conqueror of the Barren Earth, and more! Featuring Mike W. Barr, Kurt Busiek, Paul Kupperberg, Ron Randall, Trina Robbins, Joe Staton, Curt Swan, Roy Thomas, and other creators. Re-presenting the Green Arrow #1 cover by Trevor Von Eeden and Dick Giordano. Edited by Michael Eury.

A few thoughts:

  1. Pre-Crisis miniseries looks like a great topic. I had many if those. I do not recall Legend of Wonder Woman though.

When Legend of Batman and World of Krypton came out , i thought they were so cool. I read them over and over.

I loved the backstory of Krypton. It included so many references to the bits of places and history that had been dropped here and there over the years.

    • Legend of Wonder Woman I believe was published for copyright purposes. DC needed to keep WW regularly in print, or risk having the copyright revert to the heirs of William Marston. They already had wrapped up the pre-Crisis WW, and apparently the George Perez reboot was not yet ready, so they rolled out this miniseries. I don’t think it was tied to any continuity at all. I haven’t read it, but it was done by Trina Robbins, so might be interesting to search out at some point.

      • You are correct. “Legend of Wonder Woman” served as a bridge between the pre-Crisis series and the post-Crisis. In the mini, Hippolyta and the rest of the Amazons are mourning the recent loss of their Princess Diana, who perished during the Crisis. An error was made in the beginning that showed her as a clay statue rather than the de-evolved state she was in at the end of the Crisis. Anyway, using the magic sphere, Hippolyta looks back at an adventure that Diana had. The end of the mini had the amazons slowly but surely forgetting Diana, with Hippolyta being the last one. She pleaded with the Gods to have their memories of Diana restored and this occurs on the condition that they live on as ethereal forces that inspire people to live their best lives. With that taking place, the events that occurred at the end of the Crisis (the rebirth) finally take hold where the new version of Wonder Woman is due to be revealed. The last panel has one of the goddesses (Athena if memory serves me) wondering how new reset will be like.

  2. My version of Krypton is from the Silver Age. However, I ate up the Batman Untold series. The cover of Robin driving the Batmobile is classic!

  3. Some of these have been reprinted, but not all of them have — so get to work, DC!

Ya know, the time period of these mini-series — which was the same period of All-Star Squadron, JLA Detroit, and New Teen Titans — could really be considered something other than Bronze Age. DC really should embrace the Copper Age as a “thing” and stop ignoring the fact that they really had a whole ‘nother Age going on leading up to Crisis.

  4. The Krypton Chronicles was based on the Silver Age stories, Buck. You may be confusing it with the World of Krypton mini series that came out after Crisis. I thought the Untold Legend of the Batman was cool, too. It linked together all of the back stories for Batman and Robin.

  5. Wish DC would reprint the Green Arrow mini-series along with the GA-BC stories from the Dollar Size World’s Finest Comics.
