GREEN ARROW: THE LONGBOW HUNTERS to Get ABSOLUTE EDITION

Mike Grell’s seminal miniseries will be remastered for the high-end release…

Mike Grell’s landmark 1987 miniseries Green Arrow: The Longbow Hunters is set to be released as a high-end Absolute Edition — the first time the story has been presented in the format. Not only that, the book will be remastered from original art.

DC has not solicited it yet and it does not appear on any retailer site or in any catalogue. But Alex Galer, the publisher’s collected editions editor posted a note in The Mike Grell Page Facebook group in late May:

“Hi all! I am the editor of the upcoming Green Arrow: The Longbow Hunters: Absolute Edition at DC Comics. We will be remastering the book, and I was wondering if anyone had original artwork from the landmark series. If so, I would love to showcase it in the book and use the artwork in the remastering. I really appreciate your time and help!

“(And any related material you think would be nice to include with the book, I am all for!)

“Thank you so much!”

And that’s all we know. For now.

My guess is the book will be set for a 2027 release, to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the series, which put Oliver Queen on a new path in the post-Crisis Modern Age.

  1. This is GREAT news! Grell’s Kickstarter page for his Jon Sable deluxe hardcover reissues announced this in passing a few weeks ago. Hands down, my favorite interpretation of the Oliver Queen character. And as much as I liked the ongoing series that followed, the original three-issue mini-series was the gem of the run.

Now hoping that DC announces similar Absolute Editions for other ’80s/’90s Prestige Format mini-series like:

    Howard Chaykin’s Blackhawk
    Tim Truman’s Hawkworld
    Gaiman and McKean’s Black Orchid
    Chaykin and JLGL’s Twilight
    Starlin and Mignola’s Cosmic Odyssey
    Gibbons and Rude’s World’s Finest
    Bruning and Kubert’s Adam Strange
Robinson and Smith’s The Golden Age

    • I heartily second the suggestion of the James Robinson/Paul Smith miniseries, The Golden Age.

And while an Absolute Edition would be a long shot, I would love to see the Mike E. Barr/Trevor Von Eden Green Arrow miniseries collected as a Deluxe Edition. Yes, it’s short, but there’s probably some additional material that could be added: the pitch for the series, the plan for the ongoing that was scrapped in favor of the Mike Grell mini and series that followed, etc.
