GOTHAM TRIBUNE: Weird Bat-Items I Have Loved

I have, as you might imagine, a pretty healthy Batcollection. Someday, when I’m feeling even more self-referential than usual, I’ll share! In the meantime, for this week’s GOTHAM TRIBUNE, I pay tribute to those oddball items I’ve loved and lost.

I’m guessing a lot of these will be familiar to you. Oh, and I make no bones about it. I found all these pictures via the Interwebs, so copyright belongs to blah blah blah fine print, fine print …

These are called Soakies. I didn’t know that then, but these, I do believe, are the first “action figures” I ever had in the late ’60s-early ’70s. They certainly predated Megos and helped make BAThtime lots of fun. There was no Joker or anything so I used to bang the hell out of them against each other. This is about as good a paint job as mine had. Note the West-Ward styling. Don’t have ’em anymore. Dunno why. Please send them to me for Hanukkah or Christmas. I also have a birthday in February.

I had this mug. It had a plastic, kinda see-through bottom. It had crack in the bottom and used to leak. I didn’t care. I still drank out of it BECAUSE I HAD TO. This is how I found out just how sticky orange juice could be. Didn’t care. It was also about this grimy. Don’t have it anymore. Dunno why. Please send it to me for Hanukkah or Christmas. I also have a birthday in February.

I had one of these. I still might have it buried somewhere. It’s ceramic. Nice, isn’t it? In case I never find mine, please send it to me for Hanukkah or Christmas. I also have a birthday in February. Just to be safe.

In the days before iTunes and DVRs and Blu-Rays and Arkham video games and bootlegs and whatnot, we had to rely on Channel 11, Channel 7 … and record players for our multimedia Batfix. You kids get off my lawn! I used to listen to this LP. I remember virtually nothing about it. I also don’t have a turntable anymore. No matter, please send it to me for Hanukkah or Christmas. I also have a birthday in February. And, also, ADAMS!

Wait, no, there was also VIEW-MASTER! 21 stereo pictures! This is how I got my Adam West fix when the show wasn’t on. Good God, I looked at these over and over and over. View-Master blessed us with “The Purr-fect Crime/Better Luck, Next Time,” the first Julie Newmar episode. I used to watch these like a TV show, cliffhanger and all. This might be why I consider this to be the best Batman two-parter. Or maybe not. Maybe, you know, JULIE NEWMAR. Please send it to me for Hanukkah or Christmas. I also have a birthday in February. (P.S. That top pic is the style I had, so you should get that one for me.)

From the Batcomputer: Not a huge Batweek on the racks. There’s Detective Comics #26 and the entertaining She-Bat storyline. There’s Batman Superman #6, which is kind of OK. There’s the Nightwing Vol. 3: Death of the Family trade paperback. Good week to try something: I recommend Batwing #26 from Justin Gray, Jimmy Palmiotti, Eduardo Pansica and Eber Ferreira. This has been a good solid, title since the revamp starring Luke Fox (Lucius’ son). Oh, and behold the lovely Darwyn Cooke cover:

  1. I second the notion that people should try Batwing! It’s been great with Palmiotti and Gray at the helm. As for a bunch of old toys saturated in trace amounts of children’s saliva, you should only try these wearing latex gloves and a face mask.
