FULL BLEED MAGAZINE’s 13 New Year’s Resolutions

PLUS: An EXCLUSIVE peek at artist Roger Langridge’s new Fred the Clown story…

There’s always room for more smart comics insight and Full Bleed has you covered: The literary, print-only magazine — published by IDW’s PDX satellite — is in the middle of its third Kickstarter campaign following two successful volumes.

Volume No. 3: Heavy Rotation features a lost interview with Grant Morrison, who dishes on his rivalry with Alan Moore; a discussion with Metallica’s Kirk Hammett and Anthrax’s Scott Ian about their love of genre fiction; as well as contributions from Tini Howard, Vivek Tiwary, Joe Lansdale and many others. (Click here for the full rundown.)

Anyway, it’s the start of the new year, so it’s resolution time and Dirk Wood, Full Bleed’s curator and editor (along with Ted Adams), has 13 of them — plus helpful commentary — for the mag’s readers. Oh, and there’s a nice little look at Roger Langridge’s new Fred the Clown story too. — Dan

By DIRK WOOD

1. During a challenging time for print media, in fact, media in general: To become an even more vital part of the solution. To publish the most diverse content in every way: format, creator, subject matter. To push ourselves to be an absolutely essential part of any library. To make the kind of books that people don’t just want, but they have to have. To become practically an adjective when people are looking to describe unique content with beautiful presentation, in the world of books.

What can I say, we’re ambitious. And we’ve only just started.

2. Publish an interview with someone I currently haven’t heard of.

Odds are good on this one. We’ve published interviews with Stephen King and Nnedi Okorafor, not to mention comic legends including Alan Moore, Gilbert and Jaime Hernández and Walter Simonson but there’s a real thrill discovering someone new when there’s an in-depth profile.

3. To publish a creator from EVERY continent in 2019.

Yes, this includes Antarctica! We don’t want to make these TOO easy, you know. (2018 we published creators currently living in North America, South America, Europe and Africa, so we’re on the right track here.)

4. Sell books on EVERY continent in 2019.

Now this one, we already did. Except…. you guessed it, Antarctica. I’m looking at you, person in a parka!

5. We will TRY to speak online in complete sentences. We will avoid saying things like “It me,” “Because reasons,” or “All the feelz.”

THIS.

6. To finish our first four-volume “arc” and create the world’s first 800-page boxed set of a print-only, hardcover comics-and-culture magazine!

To be fair, we’re already 3/4 of the way there on this one.

7. To publish something by someone who has the opposite political views of myself.

I do, however, reserve the right to make fun of them.

Hammett and Ian, by Tony Shasteen

8. We’ve published quite a bit about rock and roll music. In 2019, we want to publish something about musical genres we haven’t hit yet.

This would include jazz, easy listening (not kidding), hip hop, and yep, even country. In the meantime, Vol. 3 has a conversation with two guys you’ve heard of, Metallica’s Kirk Hammett and Anthrax’s Scott Ian and an essay on race and the Beatles by bestselling writer and Broadway producer Vivek J. Tiwary.

9. Convince someone to get a Full Bleed tattoo, without paying them to be a “sponsor.”

Could this be you?

10. Tell our friends and family we love them, more often than we do now.

No joke here, that’s just something we all should do.

11. Send some fan-mail to Jimmy Fallon. But we will make it the opposite of fan-mail, because Jimmy Fallon sucks.

You know it’s true.

Roger Langridge

12. To continue to push the limits of what a print publication can be, by combining every format available, be it comics, fiction, non-fiction, photo feature, interview or essay.

Illustrated poetry? Don’t you be surprised.

13. CONTINUE SUPPORTING PRINT MEDIA, ON ALL FRONTS!

We of course, politely ask that you do the same!
