FRANK MILLER’s Final DARK KNIGHT RETURNS Facsimile Variant Is as Badass as the First Three

Coming later in May…

The Batman: The Dark Knight Returns #4 Facsimile Edition is due out May 27, wrapping up the four-issue reprint run — and Frank Miller has one more superb variant cover.

Dig this:

Like the other covers, Miller takes the minimalist approach and while the original is a fan-favorite, the artist brings a fittingly eerie tone to this one. I’d almost call it poignant.

The original, natch

It also riffs on Miller’s 300:

If you haven’t seen the other variants — or the ones by Jim Lee, Jock, Frank Quitely, Brian Bolland, and Jason “ToyOtter” Geyer and Alex Saviuk, check out the links below!

  1. As much as I would have loved to have gotten the variant covers of this facsimile run I just went with the standard cover A set.
I’m actually glad that I did. I see DC is soliciting a deluxe hardcover version that appears will collect the variant covers (outside of the foil covers of course)
It’ll be nice to own a deluxe version of this story again and not have to be saddled with being forced to have DK2 also tacked on. No matter how I try I just can’t get into that sequel. TDKR in my opinion is best when held up all on its own.

  2. My first thought was the Ideal Bat Helmet from the ‘60s

  3. This facsimile series frustrates me.

The A cover is for a reprint that does not have a card stock cover like the original. Wouldn’t anyone wanting a facsimile of each issue want, and expect, it to have a card stock cover? But to get the card stock cover, you have to get a DIFFERENT cover from the original…so you cannot get a facsimile of the original… you have to choose between card stock and the original cover. Really frustrating for no good reason.

Don’t get me wrong, I like having a no card stock option, but imo that should have the non-original Miller covers while the card stock version should have the original Miller covers. I just feel I’m missing out on the point of a facsimile.
