EXCLUSIVE: BATMAN #181 Is Next Up in DC’s Facsimile Edition Line

Poison Ivy’s debut gets reprinted this September…

We broke the news in May that DC is launching a new line of facsimile editions this August — accurate reprints of significant issues, complete with ads, letter columns and whatnot.

First in line are Batman #232, which introduced Ra’s al Ghul, and House of Secrets #92, featuring the debut of Swamp Thing.

Next up? Batman #181 in September — the first appearance of Poison Ivy.

Check out the official solicitation info, to be released soon by DC:

BATMAN #181 FACSIMILE EDITION

Written by ROBERT KANIGHER and GARDNER FOX
Art by SHELDON MOLDOFF, JOE GIELLA, CHIC STONE and SID GREENE
Cover by CARMINE INFANTINO and MURPHY ANDERSON

“Beware of—Poison Ivy!” The debut of one of the Dynamic Duo’s greatest foes is reprinted in this new facsimile edition, just in time for HARLEY QUINN AND POISON IVY #1! In this story, Poison Ivy crashes an art gallery opening to announce that she intends to become Gotham City’s greatest villainess! How will the Caped Crusaders stop her mad plan—when Ivy’s kisses can cloud men’s minds?

And in the backup story, Batman must help one of the Mystery Analysts of Gotham City when she’s threatened by a mysterious voice. This issue also includes a two-page pinup of the Dynamic Duo!

$3.99 US | 32 PAGES | FC

Now, this is a doozy and not just because it’s a classic Silver Age issue and the introduction of one of Batman’s most popular foes. It’s because it’s not always easy to find an original copy that’s complete: That pin-up mentioned in the solicitation blurb — by Carmine Infantino and Murphy Anderson — is frequently missing in back issues.

See, those pesky kids in 1966 would actually pull that pin-up out and hang it on their walls. (Heaven forfend!) But who could blame them — the mini-poster became one of the most iconic Batman and Robin images of the era, with both figures used as stock art for years afterward:

The idea of getting a new copy of this issue, all pristine and sharp? For four bucks?

My, oh my.

  1. Great news – I’m missing #181 in my run and really did not want to shell out big bucks for a copy. A reprint is fine with me.
