DC Plans LEGION: FIVE YEARS LATER Omnibus For This Summer

A controversial run is set to get the big book treatment…

With the Legion back in fine fettle, DC is reaching back into the vaults for one of the more talked-about runs in the team’s history. According to a listing on Amazon, the publisher is planning the Legion of Super-Heroes: Five Years Later Omnibus Vol. 1 for August.

Check out the official description, along with placeholder art:

It’s the Legion of Super-Heroes like you’ve never seen them before, as the heroes of the 30th-century face one of their boldest and most controversial eras!

As DC’s 30th century super-team, the Legion of Super-Heroes had always stood as a shining example of futuristic optimism–but that changed in 1989 with a new Legion of Super-Heroes series that brought the timeline forward five years. In this even further future, the United Planets became a darker place, with familiar characters changed and the Earth overtaken by alien invaders–and the team reunited to take on these dangerous new threats.

Now this bold and controversial part of DC history is finally collected in an omnibus edition, from the creative team of DC legend Keith Giffen and Tom and Mary Bierbaum!

Collects Adventures of Superman #478, Legion of Super-Heroes #1-39, Who’s Who #1-11, #13, #14, #16, Timber Wolf #1-5, and Legion of Super-Heroes Annual #1-3.

A few thoughts:

— The 1,456-page edition lists for $150. Still, the book has not been formally solicited yet, so it’s not official until DC announces it.

— Not just that, DC’s book-release schedule can be a moving target, with books solicited, cancelled, resolicited and/or rejiggered. This has been common for a while now. Just click here to check out the recent ping-ponging of the Tales of the Batman: Steve Englehart collection.

— A Five Years Later collection has been bandied about before, though not as an omnibus. It never came to pass. That’s not to say that will happen here, obviously. It just re-emphasizes that DC often shifts its priorities, so keep your eyes and ears open. It’s like the comic-book version of the Hot Stove League, y’know?

  1. I recently re-read this Legion series and man, it’s not a quick read–so the opposite of what’s overall being put out these days lol. Lots of intense, great stuff. I hated a lot of what was done to some of my favorite Legionnaires but have/had to admit it made for great reading. I’m pretty sure it was THE comic I dove into first the weeks it came out…30…friggin’…years…ago. {yikes!}
