This is brutal news.
Darwyn Cooke’s family has put out this statement:
“It is with tremendous sadness that we announce Darwyn is now receiving palliative care following a bout with aggressive cancer. His brother Dennis and I, along with our families appreciate the outpouring of support we have received. We ask for privacy as we go through this very difficult time.”
Cooke is one of my absolute favorite artists. His art helped bring me back to comics after a lengthy absence. We wish him and his family all comfort.

I second your emotion, Dan! Ever since DARWYN COOKE appeared full-blown out of the starting gate with his graphic novel Batman: Ego–kinda like Walter Simonson did 2 decades years earlier with Manhunter–Cooke has brought back that Silver Age-y magic and Bruce Timm-esque graphic dynamic to comic book art, and we’ve all been the richer for it. One of the highlights of my 24 years of San Diego Comicons was sharing a joint with Cooke on the terrace of the Windham Hotel, and me getting to pretty much tell him what I just wrote! May he beat cancer with a Parker-like beatdown!
