BATMAN to be Celebrated at International Conference

Bowling Green State University is prepping an academic symposium for 2019.

Batman is many things to many people — and now he’s the subject of an international academic conference set for his 80th anniversary next year.

Batman in Popular Culture is scheduled for April 12-13, 2019, at Bowling Green State University and is set to feature 80 to 100 separate panels and discussions, according to one of the chief organizers, Chuck Coletta.

Best part? It’ll be free and open to the public.

Bowling Green (located in Bowling Green, Ohio), is one of the few major universities with a robust pop-culture pedigree: The Department of Popular Culture (where Coletta is an instructor) and the Browne Popular Culture Library on the campus are dedicated to the study of all the fun things we obsess over in our everyday lives. (Click here for more info.)

“The Browne Pop Culture Library has a massive collection of items such as romance novels, pulps, mystery & detective fiction, movie & TV scripts, greeting cards, action figures, toys, and one of the largest comic book/graphic novel collections in an American academic library,” Coletta wrote me. “This spring we had a conference devoted to romance novels and I thought it may be a good idea to follow up in 2019 with a Batman conference.”

Organizers have already lined up the keynote speakers (as yet unannounced) and they are seeking academic and nonacademic papers and presentations on all aspects of Batman’s legacy. And you do NOT have to be an academic to attend or participate. (Proposals are being accepted already, though there’s a deadline of 12/30/18. If they get an overabundance of great pitches, they may even extend the conference a day.)
