13 GREAT SKETCHES: A RAMONA FRADON Celebration

The beloved artist has retired at the age of 97…

UPDATED 1/3/24: Artist Ramona Fradon, one of the all-time greats, is retiring at the age of 97, according to a Facebook post by Catskill Comics, the site through which she sold her commissions. As a tribute, we’re “reprinting” this piece from her 96th birthday in 2022. Dig Ramona’s lovely art. — Dan

Who doesn’t love Ramona Fradon? Nobody!

Fradon was born 96 years ago on Oct. 2, 1926, and is one of the last living links to the Golden Age. She’s best known for her work at DC Comics — particularly Aquaman, Metamorpho and Super Friends in the Silver and Bronze Ages — and on the Brenda Starr newspaper strip.

We’ve celebrated Fradon in the past with 13 COVERS or 13 SPLASH PAGES, but this year we’ve trawled the web for some of her grooviest sketches.

Dig these:

  8. These are beautiful. I had the good fortune to meet her at a convention back in 2019 and asked her to sign a couple of comics, but didn’t want to spring for a sketch. Guess I’ll never get that 2nd chance now. (SIGH.)
