13 GREAT CAPTAIN ACTION ARTISTS: Jerry Ordway

The penultimate entry features an artist perfect for Captain Action.

Murphy Anderson, Gil Kane (and Dick Giordano), Joe Jusko

For 13 weeks we’re celebrating 13 great comics artists who’ve put their stamp on Captain Action, the kitschy cool superhero supertoy of yesteryear. Click here for installments on other artists like Murphy Anderson, Dick Giordano and Mike Allred.)

Here we are in Week 12. One more to go next week — who could it be?! — but until then we’ve got an artist ideally suited to the subject: classic comics stylist Jerry Ordway.

Here’s Joe Ahearn of Captain Action Enterprises:

Jerry is a big Captain Action fan and was tapped for a comics-style ad during the Playing Mantis run of Captain Action toys from 1998 to 2000. Vignettes in the ad promoted the release of the Lone Ranger uniform set as well as the Action Boy figure and the Speed Racer uniform set.

Jerry was kind enough to allow us to reprint the art as a comic-book cover for the Captain Action Comics Special #1 during the Moonstone run.

Most recently, Jerry provided a killer piece for the new Captain Action 50th Anniversary card game — Dr. Evil disguised as Dr. Ling.

NEXT WEEK: Kurt Schaffenberger. Click here.
