13 DAYS OF THE NEAL ADAMS GALLERY: Batman, the Joker and a Ghostly Friend

Just a nice drive to Arkham with a couple of old friends.

Neal Adams’ permanent art gallery at his Midtown Manhattan studio is now complete and we’re giving you an EXCLUSIVE inside look with 13 DAYS OF THE NEAL ADAMS GALLERY.

Each day, we’re highlighting one of the pieces of art that adorns the walls of the gallery, complete with Neal’s EXCLUSIVE commentary. You’ll see a diverse selection of pages and covers featuring the characters for which Adams is best known.

The gallery, which is open to the public, is located at 15 W. 39th Street. Admission is free but you have to call first before you come over (212-869-4170). For tons more info on the gallery and what you can see — and buy — there, click here.

This is our penultimate regular entry so I’m gonna go back to Batman again because that’s the way I’m wired. Here’s another spread from Batman: Odyssey, this from Issue #5. Looks like Batman’s just having a grand ol’ conversation with his buddy the Joker. What, what? Nah, Deadman’s in the madman’s body.

Here’s the final version, for comparison. I like that the license plate shows that Gotham’s New York. As it should be.

Here’s Adams:

“This was an absolute delight because while it seems like a conversation between the insane Joker and the intense Batman, it is actually a conversation between Batman and Deadman, who in this sequence, inhabits Joker’s body. The fun part is imagining the things that Deadman would say to Batman coming out of Joker’s face. For the result of the conversation, you’ll have to read Batman: Odyssey … and the result of Batman: Odyssey is that maybe Batman has been fighting clowns all along. Man, I gotta tell you I love comic books.”

  1. Love the scene, love the art. But the coloring gets in the way of Neal’s lines. Can we get a black and white edition of Odyssey?
