EXCLUSIVE: Miller and Janson, side by side …

LettercolBatman03

The Dark Knight Returns Gallery Edition from Graphitti Designs and DC is due out 5/18 and every day for 13 days we’re presenting a page (sometimes two!) EXCLUSIVELY here at 13th Dimension.

The 13 x 20 book features hundreds of amazingly detailed pages scanned directly from Frank Miller and Klaus Janson’s original art.

As I noted in my complete review (click here), one of the best parts of the Gallery Edition is seeing the difference between Frank Miller’s published and Klaus Janson’s unpublished inks. Janson was the primary inker on the project but in numerous cases, Miller revised the art. Most people have only seen the final, published versions but now — in a true rarity — you get to see side-by-side comparisons, here on the final two days of our series. (For a side-by-side comparison of the following page — featuring the death of the Jokerclick here!)

The pages below are from Batman’s climactic battle with the Joker in Issue #3.

Here’s a thumbnail of the two pages …

  1. Great stuff! I did not know about this. Now that I have seen both versions I definitely like Jansons versions more!
