13 COVERS: Women Who Should Be on the Angouleme List

The French controversy is a disgrace.

In case you missed it, the list of creators being considered for the Grand Prix — the lifetime achievement award — at the French comics festival Angouleme featured 30 men — and no women.

Amid cries of boycotts, candidate withdrawals and a selection committee with oeuf on its collective face, the festival grudgingly added two women to the list — both of whom had been nominated in the past: Marjane Satrapi and Posy Simmonds.

How … magnanimous.

So I tried to see how long it would take to come up with the names of 13 women who should be considered without a second thought. It took a minute, maybe?

Of course, there are many more than 13 but we count in such increments around here, so 13 it is. Feel free to add your own selections in the comments below or in whichever social-media thread you found this.

And if I have to go over everything these women have accomplished with you, you’re doing it wrong.

  1. Agree with this list. I’d also give a nod to Molly Crabapple, comics illustrator, author, journalist, entrepreneur, activist, and social media phenom. She is the author of “Drawing Blood”, a personal memoir, released on December 1, 2014. It is an excellent read. She is so talented, and her career is still quite young.
