13 COVERS: The X-MEN of CLAREMONT & BYRNE

Chris Claremont turns 67.

Going all the way back to Siegel and Shuster, there are certain magical collaborations that have made comics what they are today: Lee and Kirby. O’Neil and Adams. Miller and Mazzucchelli.

Claremont and Byrne.

Chris Claremont was born Nov. 25, 1950, and I gotta say it’s always a bit of a challenge to do a 13 COVERS birthday salute for a writer. They didn’t draw the pictures, y’know? One solution is to celebrate that writer’s work in a specific time period, like I did with Roy Thomas’ X-Men over here, or spotlight a partnership where a writer’s already great work is elevated even higher.

Claremont and Byrne’s X-Men run in the late ’70s/early ’80s is so stunningly influential, it spawned a gazillion-dollar movie and television X-industry. If you’ve seen it on screen, chances are you read it in their comics first.

So here are 13 COVERS celebrating Claremont and Byrne’s X-Men. All of these covers were inked by the great Terry Austin except for one, which is noted below:

Inked by Bob Layton
