13 COVERS: The Wonderful DC World of DARWYN COOKE

The artist would have been 55. He left us far, far too soon.

I’ll keep this fairly brief: Darwyn Cooke, who was born Nov. 16, 1962, was a supremely talented illustrator who left an indelible mark on comics and animation. He died last year at the age of 53 — and it still feels strange to write that.

So I’d just as soon get right to the art. Because that will always sing and soar.

Two quick things things, though. There are two other stories to which I’d also like to direct your attention: The first is a story we ran shortly after his death in which some of comics’ top creators — including Doc Shaner, Kevin Nowlan and Scott Snyder — picked their favorite Cooke works. You can click here for that.

The second is a piece by Cooke himself that he put together for us in 2014. He created a list of Will Eisner stories that all fans should read. You can click here for that.

You will not be sorry, I promise you.

Meanwhile, for this year’s 13 COVERS birthday salute, I’ve picked out my favorites from DC’s Darwyn Cooke Variant Cover Month in 2014.

If you don’t see your favorite here, feel free to add it in the comments below.

  1. Outstanding art. Cooke really made comics fun to look at. He left quite a legacy.

Hopefully he managed to inspire a few illustrators so he can live on through them.

  2. A memorable style that I loved. The big two had a style standard at one time I’ve heard. I would love to see Mr Cooke presentation become that somewhere. The Allreds are in the same league. Great tip of the hat memory.
