13 COVERS: The ROM Stories of BILL MANTLO

A BIRTHDAY SALUTE: The widely respected writer turns 70…

Bill Mantlo — born 70 years ago on Nov. 9, 1951, is one of Marvel’s most popular Bronze Age writers. He’s well known for co-creating Rocket Raccoon and Cloak and Dagger, as well as fan-fave runs on the toy tie-in comics The Micronauts and Rom — both of which defied expectations and became critical and commercial successes.

For this year’s 13 COVERS birthday salute, we’re going with Rom, pretty much just because. Artists include Michael Golden (Mantlo’s Micronauts collaborator), Al Milgrom, Frank Miller, Bill Sienkiewicz and more.

Dig it.

  1. I’ve always said ROM is so intertwined in the Marvel Universe, no one else (like IDW) can possibly reprint it. But Marvel could, if they just coughed up the license fee for the toy. How much could it POSSIBLY cost? We could probably raise the money in a bake sale. On surveys, ROM and Micronauts are the two properties that constantly rise to the top of “most wanted to reprint”.

    • These were both great series. I never missed an issue. Iā€™d willingly hand money over for a collection reprint of both.

  2. Yeah, Marvel really needs to pay the licensing fee to put out a series of Rom Epic Collections. This was some great stuff. Bill and Sal did a great job with the title.

  3. The Rom character is really interesting. I’m feeling like reading the entire “Rom” series by Marvel. šŸ™‚
