13 COVERS: An ERNIE CHAN Birthday Celebration

Underrated no more.

Last year, I made the mistake of underestimating Ernie Chan’s popularity with Batman fans.

I posted a 13 COVERS birthday salute (click here) more out of a sense of duty than desire, not realizing the fondness a lot of fans have for the artist also known as Ernie Chua.

So I sheepishly return with another selection of his Batwork, which brightened many a newsstand in the mid-’70s.

And if you dig these, then check out last year’s selection too — click here!

Ernie Chan was born July 27, 1940 — 77 years ago. He died in 2012.

Enjoy.

  1. Funny, I hated Ernie’s work when I was a kid and buying these off the stands. I would be so disappointed if it was Ernie over John Calnan, but today I can appreciate his work and I think it’s head and shoulders over the over rendered over muscled version of Batman coming out today.

  2. On that last cover, Commissioner Gordon looks like he’s being played by Alan Napier.
