13 COVERS: An ALEX TOTH Birthday Celebration

Alex Toth was born June 25, 1928. He was, as they say, an artist’s artist.

I’d wager that most average fans know Alex Toth from his animation designs, including the Super Friends and Space Ghost. But he was so, so much more. When I interview artists, a high percentage pick Toth specifically as one of their major inspirations. He worked in a wide array of genres with what increasingly became his own, unmistakable style. He was a giant.

Toth was born 87 years ago. He died in 2006.

Here are 13 of my favorite Toth covers. Usual 13 COVERS caveat: This is by no means a definitive list and it’s quite subjective. So feel free to add your own in the comments section or in whatever thread you find this.

Oh, but before I start, I did want to share what’s my favorite Toth page ever — from Adventure Comics #418, 1972 (uncolored):
