13 COVERS: A WENDY PINI Birthday Salute

The pioneering artist behind one comics’ great fantasy titles was born June 4, 1951.

ElfQuest is one of those titles that engenders almost cult-like devotion. Writer Richard and artist Wendy Pini were at the vanguard of what would become the modern independent comics movement, self-publishing through their WaRP Graphics, and interest in ElfQuest endures to this day. Wendy Pini herself inspired a generation of women to become cartoonists and her decades-long relationship with fans at conventions has made her a comics-culture idol.

As we do at 13th Dimension, here’s a 13 COVERS birthday salute — centering on the Original Quest and its initial reprinting at Marvel. There’s so much more we could have included, so if you don’t see your fave, feel free to add it in the comments below or in whichever social-media thread you found this.

BONUS: For Aimee LoSecco’s grand tribute to Pini’s days on the con circuit as Red Sonja, you gotta click right here. You will not be disappointed!

  1. Very nice! Here’s a poser for anyone who care to take it on: What 13 covers, from Fantasy Quarterly all the way up to the most recent issue of Final Quest, would work best to show how Wendy’s drawing style for the elves has both evolved yet stayed true to the underlying spirit/structure of the characters? Mmm?
