13 COVERS: A NICK CARDY Birthday Celebration

The late, great artist was born 99 years ago!

Man, I love Nick Cardy’s art. Just so damn pretty to look at. And his covers are epically groovy.

Now, when I think of Cardy — who was born Oct. 20, 1920, and died in 2013 — I immediately think of Aquaman and Teen Titans. That’s natural.

But he was such a cover workhorse, that you can pick practically any Bronze Age DC title and you’ll find a great selection of Cardy art.

So for this year’s 13 COVERS birthday salute, I’ve chosen to spotlight the Man of Steel. (And make sure you check the links below for 13 COVERS celebrations from years past!)

Up, up and way!

  1. ACTION # 434 is one of my favorite covers of all time.

  2. It’s a hardy Cardy party. As much as I appreciated Curt Swan, I am more of a Cardy fan. I remember many of these covers from having purchased and read many of them. The touching cover of Superman # 254 above to the somewhat humorous cover of Superman # 281 with the 1st appearance of Vartox, a villain many have said looks like a 1980’s male porn star doing a spoof of a sci-fi.
