13 COVERS: A NICK CARDY Birthday Celebration

Nick Cardy is one of my all-time favorite artists.

And I’ve said it before but it didn’t start out that way: As a kid, I just shrugged him off. Just shows you how foolish kids can be.

Anyway, Cardy would have been 97 today (he died in 2013) so it’s time for a 13 COVERS birthday celebration.

When I think of Cardy, I think immediately of Aquaman and Teen Titans. Sure, he worked on so much more, but that’s where my synaptic reflexes go. Makes sense, because that’s probably his greatest — or at least best known — work.

Last year, Aquamaven Rob Kelly picked 13 Aquaman covers (click here) so the Swift and Powerful Monarch of the Ocean gets a pass this time around. Instead, I’m going back to Teen Titans. I featured them two years ago (click here) but it’s such fertile ground that I can’t help but want to mine some more. I’ve kept the repetition to a minimum, but there are a couple that I always have to highlight. (I’ve also thrown in some TT guest appearances.)

Enjoy:

  2. Teen Titans 23 is always bittersweet for me. I mean, it’s a GREAT cover, featuring a GREAT new costume on a GREAT character… but it also represents the end of Princess Ponytail, who will always be an especial favorite.
