13 COVERS: A JOE SINNOTT Birthday Celebration

One of comics’ greatest inkers was born 94 years ago…

The great Marvel inker Joe Sinnott died in June at the age of 93 and the outpouring from the comics industry was fittingly powerful and passionate.

Naturally, much of the coverage was devoted to Sinnott’s classic collaboration with Jack Kirby, in particular their landmark work on Fantastic Four in the ’60s.

But Sinnott — who was born Oct. 16, 1926 — worked on much more than that during his lengthy career, including The Avengers.

So for a change of pace, this 13 COVERS birthday salute spotlights Joltin’ Joe’s time with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in the early/mid-’80s.

  1. I had most of those issues of Avengers back in the early 80s. I was really into the series and would pick them up at either my local Circle K or at the very first comic book shop I ever encountered, the Comic Castle in Fullerton, California. Joe’s inks brilliantly complimented Roger Stern’s writing and Al Milgrom’s pencils, but as his devoted fans know well, everything Joe Sinnott’s pen touched turned to artistic gold. Good times.
