13 COVERS: A HARVEY KURTZMAN Birthday Salute

War is hell.

And few artists captured its unrelenting horror better than Harvey Kurtzman.

Kurtzman was born Oct. 2, 192492 years ago. He was one of comics’ major pioneers and there are so many ways I could have gone with a 13 COVERS salute, but I’ve chosen to spotlight his war work at EC, with Two-Fisted Tales and Frontline Combat.

Unlike many of his contemporaries who focused more on grim bravery, Kurtzman chose to focus on grim terror and the inherent randomness and unfairness of war. These 13 COVERS remain as eye-opening today as they did more than 60 years ago.

Kurtzman died in 1993. His art endures.
