13 BATMAN COVERS: A DICK SPRANG Birthday Celebration

Dick Sprang, one of the Batman stalwarts of the Golden Age, was born July 28, 1915 — 100 years ago today.

Interesting thing about Dick Sprang. He’s become shorthand for a certain beloved-yet-antiquated Batman artistic style — that chunky, pre-Infantino look. People refer to the “Dick Sprang Batman” when, really, much of that look was down to a battery of Bob Kane ghosts like Win Mortimer or Shelly Moldoff.

That’s not a knock on Sprang. Quite the opposite. He’s the name that comes to mind when you’re talking Batman art in the years before the Silver Age. Perhaps that’s because he was one of the cleanest and most stylish of the Batman artists. Maybe it’s because he was simply terrific.

Whatever it was, we’re giving him not only one 13 COVERS Salute, we’re giving him two: 13 BATMAN COVERS and 13 DETECTIVE COVERS. (Usual caveat applies: Completely subjective lists. Feel free to add your own in the comments or Facebook or wherever you see this posted.)

A classic and I'm proud to own this one.
