SURPRISE! Funko Releases INSANE New Batman & Batmobile Set

Didn’t see this one coming.

OK, OK, look.

When Funko said that we could expect different colored Batmobiles as part of its line of Batman ’66 3.75-inch action figures, I assumed they were talking about red, blue and gold variants a la the Japanese tin toys of yesteryear.

I didn’t expect THIS:

This… is … MAGNIFICENT.

Get ready for the adventures of Sherbet Batman and his Silver Batmobile!

Best part? The set’s available now, directly from Funko. (Click here for ordering info.)

Alright, alright, I’ll back up in case you’re just joining us and are completely confused by all this.

Funko this summer put out its first wave of Batman ’66 figures. They’re great and we’ve been covering them mightily. (Click here for a whole raft of interviews, reveals, features and reviews.)

From the outset, Funko made it clear that we’d see some offbeat Batmobile variants inspired by the zany toys produced in Japan and elsewhere in Asia in the ’60s and ’70s. Pardon the pun, but the company’s gone down this road before with its Pop!, Dorbz and Wacky Wobbler lines.

Usually these rides are convention exclusives and the like. The San Diego Comic-Con exclusive was a red Batmobile/green Batman set, for example:

Anyway, senior designer Reis O’Brien told us here that we should be prepared from some wacky stuff but I didn’t expect something this spectacularly, gloriously unhinged.

The set, which goes for $50 and is limited to 1,500 pieces, features the same zippy, Japanese-inspired packaging as the SDCC variant. The figure itself is a riotous orange, red and blue — even brighter than Robin’s red-breasted threads.

This gives me hope we’ll eventually see Italian Movie Poster Batman. If we do, I’ll know I’ve done my job.

Make this happen, Funko. MAKE. THIS. HAPPEN.

The sweet silver Batmobile features red detailing. It’s inspired by Japanese tin toys but also slot-car versions of the roadster.

Now, if this was also inspired by slot cars, maybe we’ll see something like this at some point:

The white walls! (From eBay)

Some people don’t like variants but this is done with such panache that I really welcome sets like this. Besides, it’s nice that Funko keeps putting out Batman ’66 stuff between waves. And, hey, New York Comic Con will be here before you know it, and Funko always has a huge presence there.

Unfortunately, O’Brien said Wave 2 won’t be announced until December. But if you want to look at what could be in it, click here.

Anyway, again, if you want to order Sherbet Batman and his Silver Batmobile, click here.

In the meantime, dig more zany pix:

In case you wanted to know what regular ol’ Batman and Robin would look like in this silver beast.

That’s four Batmans (Batmen?) and counting…

  1. Cool. Just ordered this. Thanks for the heads up. I missed out on the red version, but this chrome Batmobile looks even cooler!

  2. Hi Dan, I love your website as well as this 66 Batman Funko line. I actually ordered this Batmobile from the Funko Shop site before I saw this page. The next time you talk to your Funko contacts, can you please ask them why they chose to issue this item painted dull silver instead of the advertised “chrome” finish. The photos of this item on the Funko site clearly depict a “chrome” finish, which is very different that the item they ultimately produced. Seems deceptive. Not sure I would have ordered it if I had seen accurate photos on the Funko site. Rich

  3. Wow. The show was in color, but somehow Italians didn’t have color TVs? (Apparently not.)

But more importantly, where can I get my hands on one of those “Golden Age Batman ’66” figures??
