LAST WEEK’S COMICS TODAY With Dr. Christy Blanch

Hey there Comic Peeps!

Sean Von Gorman

What a week for comics! There were so many amazing books out this week, I’m not even going to regale you with tales from ComicsPRO. Yet. So, let’s get on with the countdown. Well, it’s not a countdown but for those who listen to the Top 40, it’s an Easter Egg. So, here we go.

First, The Old Guard from Image, Greg Rucka, Leandro Fernandez, Daniela Mina and Jodi Wynne. I couldn’t keep this book on the shelf Wednesday. I knew it was good as I got to read a PDF but it’s even better in print. I love Rucka’s work (I’m ready for more Black Magic please!) and this team did not disappoint.

Second, if you missed Heathen #1 from Vault Comics, ask for it. I am a big fan of Natasha Alterici. I met her through my online comics course and knew from moment one she was super special. I was thrilled when I saw this issue in the Diamond Preview Catalog (if you don’t look at Previews, you should!!). If you like Game of Thrones, anything Norse-ish, or simply beautiful comics, this book is for you.

Finally, Dark Horse Comics gives us The Visitor: How & Why He Stayed #1 (of 5) by Mike Mignola, Chris Roberson, Paul Grist, Bill Crabtree and Clem Robins. Stop reading this column now and go get this. If your shop doesn’t have it, see if they can get you a #1 and put it on your subscription list. I am not going to tell you anything else except you want to read this and feast your eyes on the amazing art. Just do it.

Lightning Round. IDWs Highlander: The American Dream by Brian Ruckley, Andrea Mutti, Vladimir Popov and Chris Mowry. HUGE fan of the one movie that they did (I mean, there can be only one) and love that I get to read more in the series. I do wish they had gone with only one variant cover — the one where they destroyed the other copies with a sword at ComicsPRO. But, I’m OK with it. (That’s wasn’t very “lightning style,” was it!?!). …

Image’s Curse Words #2 from Charles Soule and Ryan Browne solidifies this book in my mind. I can’t get enough of it. And Chip Zdarsky’s variant cover is great. Even if it is Chip (he knows I love him!). … And Marvel’s Amazing Spider-Man #24 by Dan Slott and Giuseppe Camuncoli was also solid. I like the Jackal, so that could be part of it.

Speaking of Spider-Man, while I always say we don’t need several series with the same character (except Doctor Strange, Swamp Thing and Martian Manhunter but I am totally biased!), I am so excited for the new Peter Parker: Spectacular Spider-Man from Chip Zdarsky and Adam Kubert. And I am SUPER happy to announce that Chip will be one of our special guests at Aw Yeah Comics in Muncie, IN on Free Comic Book Day, along with Thom Zahler, Scott Bachmann and Kyle Starks! The ’66 Batmobile will also be making an appearance! It’s also my graduation day so this will be a day of super fun excitement!!!!!! Aw Yeah!

Until next week, this is Dr. Blanch, signing off!

Toodle-Pip!
