JULIE NEWMAR Sets Her Claws Into BATMAN’s Marriage Proposal

The greatest Catwoman of them all has her own thoughts on Bruce Wayne’s big question…

In case you haven’t been following along, Batman recently asked Catwoman to marry him, in Batman #24:

Written by Tom King. Pencils by David Finch.

It’s the first time we’ve seen the mainstream (i.e., non-parallel universe) Bruce Wayne do such a thing and it was handled warmly and intelligently by writer Tom King.

Selina Kyle, though, hasn’t answered the question. That’ll come soon enough.

But should she say yes? Should Bruce have even asked?

Well, I went to the greatest Catwoman of them all — Julie Newmar — for her take. After all, she’s embodied the cat-and-bat game since 1966, turning an international audience on to Batman and Catwoman’s will-they-or-won’t-they, bad girl/good guy vibe.

Turns out, she’s not crazy about the idea, which she called, with a certain measure of mock outrage, “bizarre”:

“Oh, my God, they just have to fill space, don’t they?” she said when I told her about the proposal. “They can’t just keep the intrigue going. Don’t you know about men? They don’t want to be caught! Oh, my goodness.”

That said, I asked her whether Catwoman should say yes or no.

“Not yet, not yet, not yet,” she instructed, ever the feline fatale. “She’s been running after him, clawing him, disturbing his life… so let’s pull it out a little bit, let’s string it out. Let’s tease and taunt.”

That much, DC seems to agree with.
