UPDATED 12/14/16: Unfortunately, the UN bowed to pressure from 45,000 ill-informed petitioners who say Wonder Woman doesn’t deserve this honor. We strongly disagree with their reasoning. Click here for more than that.

As I’m sure you know, it’s Wonder Woman’s 75th anniversary this year — and the United Nations has declared 10/21 to be Wonder Woman Day.

Perfect time for WONDER WOMAN WEEK!

All this week, we’ll be celebrating the Amazon princess, with commentary from an all-star line-up of creators including Greg Rucka, Trina Robbins, Gail Simone, Paul Levitz and many, many others.

We’ll also have special 13 COVERS galleries and some surprises, as well. This post will be your main index of coverage and will be updated all week, so keep coming back.

To kick things off, we’re proud to present this introduction by Christie Marston, the granddaughter of Wonder Woman’s creator, William Moulton Marston, and the keeper of the flame:

By CHRISTIE MARSTON

Something that I think gets overlooked is that Wonder Woman was not written by a comic author; she was written by a psychologist.

People are aware that William Moulton Marston was a psychologist, but usually don’t think all that deeply about how that translates to the character. Wonder Woman was written with clear intent. She was designed to be a good role model for everybody. Everybody. All genders, all ages, all walks of life. She does just that when writers use her base model as created by WMM.

As to updating to the modern age, only the surroundings need change. The core character will always be effective. (And should there be a question of whether WMM’s psychological theories might be out of date, all that’s needed is to be aware that his theories are still in daily use in the corporate world and beyond in the form of DISC theory.)

Wonder Woman has an amazingly diverse fan base. She unites people. Gender, ethnicity, age, religion — all of the dividing lines are erased by the common ideals that Wonder Woman represents. Wonder Woman fans are not necessarily — not often, actually — comic-book fans. More often than not, they were introduced to her via the TV show that gave us Lynda Carter portraying Wonder Woman as written by WMM. They see Wonder Woman as a role model, and as an inspiration. She helped many overcome difficult patches in their lives, and led them to pursuing a better life.

Wonder Woman may have started as pen and ink on a comic-book page, but she became real when she started helping real people dealing with real problems.

Wonder Woman is a real hero.

  1. As it was so clear to everyone that I was gay in my early years, all of children in my neighbourhood decided it was ok to reject me as a friend and make fun of me or bullied me the worst way possible. That made me a very introspective and sad child. Until the day I was introduced to Wonder Woman’s comics. It was the 80s, during George Perez run. She became my role model, my muse, my inspiration. She wasn’t motivated by revenge like Batman or an slurn trying to fit in a planet like Superman… she is motivated by love, she believes that the world could be a paradise like Themyscira… she always have a smile, helping hand and shoulder to anyone, even to her foes. Until today I am devoted to Mr Marston creation and I still remember how Perez version was my best friend. I could have turned into someone sad, bitter or selfish or taking medicine to helped me with depression or addicted to drugs or alcohol… I saw it happened to do many children that passed to the ssme things I did … but not me, not with a friend like Diana. Wonder Woman saved me in so many ways and I will be forever thankful for the moment Mr Marston have the idea of the amazing amazon.
