PLUS: Adams is opening his gallery for Free Comic Book Day…
Hey, if you’re in the New York area, there’s one stop you need to make on your Free Comic Book Day jaunt this Saturday (5/6): the Neal Adams Gallery in Midtown Manhattan.
Why? Three reasons. One, Adams will be there holding court. The guy loves to tell stories and he’ll be greeting fans and chatting about comics. Two, you can check out his original artwork adorning the walls, including full comics pages, strips, paintings and cover recreations. Three, he’ll be giving away the brand-spankin’-new Neal Adams Vintage Sketchbook.
This is a 32-page piece of wonder. It made its debut at C2E2, but most fans haven’t seen it and it’s pretty amazing. (By the way, if you’re not in NYC, the book may be available for sale at Adams’ upcoming convention appearances, assuming supplies last. Here’s his latest schedule.)
Just check out this incredibly rare, unpublished Batman/Man-Bat piece that goes back decades:
Here are a few more sketches, layouts and rarities, including roughs of the cover of DC Special Series #1, the classic climax to Batman #243, the wraparound to The Saga of Ra’s al Ghul #4 and one of several Ben Casey strips:
Believe me, this just scratches the surface. There’s even some Superman vs. Muhammad Ali roughs and plenty of other rare work, including Ms. Mystic and Megalith.
The gallery is located at Adams’ Continuity Studios, 15 W. 39th Street. It will be open Saturday from 10 to 6. Admission is free. There are also plenty of items for sale. For more info, call 212-869-4170.
One last, very important thing: If you’re not in New York this weekend, you’re still in luck. The gallery is open year-round and you can pop in for a visit when you’re in town. Just call that number above before you stop in.
