HOT PICKS! On Sale This Week!

Scott and Dan pick the comics they’re most looking forward to this week …

Dan Greenfield, editor, 13th Dimension

Generations: Banner Hulk and Totally Awesome Hulk, Marvel. OK. Marvel Legacy kicks off here, with the Hulks of yesterday and today meeting up and, presumably, smashing things. This is where I get on — even if I’ve never been a big fan of the Not So Jolly Green Giant. By Greg Pak and Matteo Buffagni.

New Gods Special #1, DC. DC has done a terrific job planning for Jack Kirby’s centennial, which is Aug. 28. We’ve already gotten the Kamandi Challenge and the Allreds’ Young Animal title Bug! Plus, we’re getting a Mister Miracle limited series from Tom King and Mitch Gerads. But this special is one of six coming out in August celebrating the King’s contributions to DC lore by a series of all-star talents. New Gods Special is brought to you by Shane Davis and Walt Simonson, and features some Kirby reprints to boot.

Star Trek: Waypoint #6, IDW. This one looks great! An Original Series story by writer Corinna Bechko and artist Christopher Herndon and a “Phase II” story by writer-artist Gabriel Hardman and colorist Dee Cunniffe. Phase II! Neat!

Green Arrow #28, DC. Never in my life have I read a Green Arrow solo comic for very long. I inevitably end up asking myself, “Why am I reading this when I could be reading Batman instead.” I know that’s not fair but there you have it. And I like GA, too, so go figure. Anyway, I dig this Hard-Traveling Hero storyline, with Ollie hitting the road and teaming up with various Justice Leaguers. This issue? Metropolis beckons! By Benjamin Percy and Juan Ferreyra.

Batman #28, DC. The War of Jokes and Riddles continues in earnest with the second act. This has been the Batbook of the summer, for sure. By Tom King, Mikel Janin and June Chung.

Green Hornet ’66 Meets the Spirit #2, Dynamite. The first issue was good set-up. Now I’m looking forward to this one getting moving. Let’s roll! By Fred Van Lente, Bob Q and Travis Lanham.

Jessica Jones #11, Marvel. One of Marvel’s best. Check out an EXCLUSIVE PREVIEW here. By Bendis, Gaydos, Pulido and Hollingsworth.

David Mack

True Believers, Marvel. Two more reprints. I really wish DC would do this. They’ve been doing DC Essentials, but it’s all Rebirth right now. Some $1-an-issue retro stuff would be nice, even if these stories have been read 1,000 times. Anyway, this week, we gets some Kirby Cap and Black Panther.

Marvel Comics Digest #2: The Avengers, Marvel/Archie. Marvel and Archie have combined forces on the production of these new digests. Click here for the full rundown of what’s in this one. Excelsior!

Scott Tipton, co-owner, Blastoff Comics, North Hollywood, Calif.

Harley’s Little Black Book HC, DC. These Harley Quinn team-up tales by Jimmy Palmiotti, Amanda Conner and guests like Neal Adams have been a lot of fun.

Star Trek Graphic Novel Collection #11 — The Next Generation: Intelligence Gathering, Eaglemoss. One of my earlier Trek efforts returned to print by the good folks at Eaglemoss! Featuring art by the amazing David Messina! I’m particularly fond of our Riker and Worf stories herein.

Cinegeek, IDW Publishing. This is a really fun and funny tongue-in-cheek book of little-known facts for film fanatics, accompanied by charming original illustrations. Highly recommended. By Pluttark.

Jack Kirby’s Fantastic Four: The World’s Greatest Artist’s Edition, IDW Publishing. What else is there to say? It’s all right there in the title. This book is a thing of beauty. (For a big EXCLUSIVE PREVIEW, click here. You’ll be wowed.)

  1. The Spirit’s hair is not suppose to be blonde. Also there is something about the shape of his face is all wrong. I know the artist isn’t Will Eisner but he should make the effort to draw the character as Will did.

    • I think it’s supposed to be grey hair, not blonde. Maybe they’re going with an older Spirit in this story.
