Happy Birthday Basil Gogos!

It’s Basil Gogos birthday today, though our crack reporter skills have failed us — we have no idea which birthday the master illustrator will be celebrating. Basil Gogos is mum as a mummy on the subject. The important thing is that he’s still with us and sharing his amazing monsters with us…

Basil Gogos immigrated to USA when he was 16 and studied at School of Visual Arts and  the Arts Students League of New York. After illustrating paperback book covers, he moved on to work for publisher Jim Warren and  editor Forest J. Ackerman’s Famous Monsters of Filmland. He later contributed Eerie and Creepy and many other magazines, movie posters and album covers.

And my personal favorite, because I was listening to this CD when I was working on Rat Bastard back in the late 90s. It was the return of one of my favorite bands and fellow Jersey residents, The Misfits!

  1. I got to meet Mr. Gogos last year at the Heroes Con in Charlotte, N.C. I have been a long-time fan of the old horror movies, and a avid reader of Famous Monsters. It was a great thrill to me to have the opportunity of meeting the man behind the art of some of the greatest covers of FM ever produced. He was a very kind and friendly person and seemed very pleased to meet some of his fans. I wish him well. Terry Short
