13 SKETCHES: A FRED HEMBECK Birthday Celebration

Bah, Hembeck!

Fred Hembeck, the great comic-book satirist, was born Jan. 30, 1953. His strips in the back of DC’s Bronze Age books — usually as part of the oh-how-I-miss-it Daily Planet feature (or, if memory serves me right, in the letters column) — were a delightful part of my comics upbringing.

I’ve met Fred a few times and he’s as unassuming as he is witty. I bought a Batman sketch card from him one time and that’s inspired me to switch up my usual 13 COVERS celebration. Instead, as we did last year, I’ve picked 13 SKETCH CARDS from a selection Fred’s selling on eBay.

Check out these colorful bits of whimsy — and wish Sir Hembeck a happy birthday!
