13 DAYS OF THE NEAL ADAMS GALLERY: Tribute to JOE KUBERT

From one legend to another.

Neal Adams’ permanent art gallery at his Midtown Manhattan studio is now complete and we’re giving you an EXCLUSIVE inside look with 13 DAYS OF THE NEAL ADAMS GALLERY.

Each day, we’re highlighting one of the pieces of art that adorns the walls of the gallery, complete with Neal’s EXCLUSIVE commentary. You’ll see a diverse selection of pages and covers featuring the characters for which Adams is best known.

The gallery, which is open to the public, is located at 15 W. 39th Street. Admission is free but you have to call first before you come over (212-869-4170). For tons more info on the gallery and what you can see — and buy — there, click here.

We started right off with three of Adams’ classic characters: Batman, Talia and Deadman. (Click here) That was to whet your whistle. But before we went any further, we wanted to focus on someone very special to Adams himself: Joe Kubert.

Kubert wasn’t just a magnificent artist, he was mentor to generations of creators. Adams captured the notion here with this portait of Joe Kubert surrounded by his sons and other graduates of The Kubert School in New Jersey:

Adam Kubert is immediately to Joe’s left. Andy Kubert is to the upper left of Adam. 10 points if you can name the rest…

Unlike most everything else at the Neal Adams Gallery, this piece is not for sale.

Here’s Adams:

“No one can possibly understand the esteem and respect I’ve always had for Joe Kubert, from the time I was 10 years old. Joe was — and in my mind, is — the kind of creative talent that we need in our industry. Not just a talented person but also a good businessman and a great father. And then of course there’s that other thing. Up until his death, he was healthy as a hog. There are those who believe Joe Kubert could walk through walls and take the walls with him. Joe was a man in the greatest sense of the word and, yes, I have this piece I drew for him at the gallery but it is not for sale. We will make prints for those who care, but we will keep it in the gallery for some time and then, of course, it will go to The Kubert School. But we wont sell it.”
