IDW’s Jack Kirby: Pencils and Inks — Artisan Edition, a 160-page hardcover devoted to before-and-after work by the King and his inker, Mike Royer, is due out 12/7.

For 13 days, we’re serializing the book with examples of covers, splashes and other pages from DC’s The Demon #1, Kamandi #1 and OMAC #1.

The book not only presents the pencils and inks from the three books mentioned above, it also includes a gallery of random images. This is the cover of Kamandi #23. These inks are actually not by Royer but by D. Bruce Berry.

Kirby’s pencils are first. Berry’s inks are second. I’ve stacked them so that you can see them in much bigger size than if I placed them horizontally:

  1. I worked with IDW, designing, photographing and creating this first of the kind, Jack Kirby Pencils and Inks. This book was a concept I prototyped as a hand bound book and presented to The Jack Kirby Museum four or so years ago. We shopped the prototype book around to various publishers to get it published. IDW and Scott Dunbier was great in moving our project forward, suggesting to use the first issues of The Demon, Kamandi and OMAC.

For this comparison, I chose this Kamandi cover to show how Berry’s inks differed greatly from Royer’s. Berry took Kirby’s few strokes and made them into feathered, almost solid shapes. This is the only comparison of Barry’s inks in the book. Another cover comparisons is The New Gods #5 which shows how much the pencils of the background was altered in the final original art.

The original art and photocopies were scanned from originals in high resolution for archival recording. Scans are part of the Museum’s Jack Kirby Digital Archive. I’m a Trustee and the President of the Museum.
