Seriously, what the hell is this? Cartoonist Chris Ecker (Knight Watchman), who kindly allowed me to post these pix from his gigantic collection, surmises that this might have been a riff on the Creepy Crawlers fad.

Could be. That’s one thing Ben Cooper was particularly good at. Their designs may have been off-the-charts kitschy and frequently beyond off-model, but they knew what kids wanted.
They certainly had their finger on the pulse — even if the pulse was particularly disturbing.
