13 COVERS: Marvel’s Bronze Age Monsters

Happy Halloween!

Marvel really seemed to understand the monster craze of the postwar years and in the ’70s really dove into the characters made great by Universal: Variations on Dracula, Frankenstein, the Wolf Man and the Mummy were all handled by some of the top talent of the day. Only the Creature From the Black Lagoon seemed to get short shrift. But, hey, we got Manphibian out of the deal!

Anyway, what with it being Halloween and all, I’m taking a cue from our very own Rob Kelly’s REEL RETRO CINEMA (click here) and saluting Marvel’s Bronze Age versions of the Universal Monsters — featuring the likes of Neal Adams, Gil Kane, Mike Ploog, Gene Colan and many others.

Oh, and don’t see your fave? Just add it in the comments below or in whichever social-media thread you found this.

Dig it. And, “Boo!”

  1. The Kane/Palmer examples were oddly lacking. Both were very good artists, but together–? meh
