13 COVERS: A JERRY LEWIS Celebration

Hey, lady!

UPDATED 8/20/17: Jerry Lewis has died at the age of 91. Please enjoy this 13 COVERS tribute we published for his 90th birthday. It’s as relevant today as it was then.

Y’know, I’m not quite sure what’s more amazing: That DC used to publish a Jerry Lewis comic book — or that it lasted 124 issues.

Timpani!

Times they have a-changed and now the erstwhile MDA telethon host has faded into that realm of 20th century antiques.

But not here! Jerry Lewis was born March 16, 1926, making him a nice, round 90.

I myself can’t claim to be a huge fan of the Lewis oeuvre, but he was my sister’s favorite movie star when we were kids. Hell, we even went to go see him at the Garden State Arts Center in Holmdel, N.J. (I was so young, I fell asleep on our lawn seats.) Still, “Cinderfella” was a big deal whenever it was on and we did try to stay up as long as possible every Labor Day to watch his Muscular Dystrophy Telethon on Channel 5.

Lewis’ comic book started in 1952 when it was The Adventures of Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. It became The Adventures of Jerry Lewis with Issue #41 … and lasted all the way until 1971.

That’s 19 years!

Anyway, here are 13 COVERS from his solo period … and yes, I have that one up top. (All the covers are Bob Oksner, or at least believed to be, except where noted — like the one by Neal Adams!)

  1. The Adventures of Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis / The Adventures of Jerry Lewis are some of my favorite comics! I’ve got original Bob Oksner pages from a few issues, including the Batman, Flash, and Wonder Woman issues. Thanks for recognizing this great series, Dan!

  2. Incredible that it ran for 19 years! What a different world comics was. I’ve read a few issues, and although I would have been sleeping in the lawn chair next to you Dan, I thought they were fun. Jerry Lewis will always be the guy who hosted the money raising variety show which signaled school was about to start.
